When it comes to ice, there are many different types, which vary from different shapes sizes. While all ice is meant to cool down products, believe it or not, each type of ice cube has a different purpose. Whether it be to cool beverages or to preserve cold products that are on display, each type of ice has different features and benefits. Today we are going to review the different types of ice and what each style is best used for.

    Full Ice Cubes

Full ice cubes are typically the go to choice when it comes to serving soft drinks. This type of ice cube has a slow melt rate, which means it will not water down drinks as quickly as half sized cube. On the downside, this type of ice has a slower cooling rate than half-diced ice cubes. However, when it comes to serving soft drinks in restaurants, longevity trumps the overall time it takes to cool the drink.

    Half Ice Cubes

Half ice cubes are ideal for blending drinks, for frozen cocktails and smoothies. This is because these cubes break down easily to create a smooth finish. Additionally, because of their size, half-sized ice cubes are suitable for dispensing applications. Since these cubes are smaller in size, this means they tend to cool drinkers at a faster rate than full size cubes.

    Large Ice Cubes

Typically, you will find this style of ice served in high end cocktail lounges. Large Ice Cubes are perfect for serving cocktails on the rocks, as they have a slow melt rate, which reduces the likelihood of the drink becoming watered down. These cubes can be used for bagging but are not recommended for ice dispensers.

    Gourmet Ice Cubes

Gourmet Ice Cubes are also often found in bars and cocktail lounges. This is primarily due to their slow melt rate. Gourmet Ice Cubes are suitable for bagging but are not recommended to be used in ice dispensers.

    Crescent Ice Cubes

This style of ice is commonly used in both small and large commercial applications and has a slow melt rate. Crescent Ice Cubes are slim, which allows for more ice per glass. Additionally, its crescent shape makes drinks appear fuller.

    Nugget Ice Cubes

Nugget Ice, often referred to as “chewable ice” is commonly used in healthcare facilities, hotels, and convenient stores. Nugget ice is essentially compressed flake ice with a chewable texture. Nugget ice, however, does have a fast melt rate, but this style of ice can be used in an ice dispenser.

    Flake Ice Cubes

Flake Ice is commonly used in seafood restaurants, and grocery stores where cold foods are on display. Flake ice is made up of shaved ice and is soft and thin. This form of ice is best used for cooling fresh foods and is commonly used in display cases, to keep foods chilled.
