We have promoted Edlund’s KSUV-18 to our customers as a solution for knife and utensil sterilization, but in light of Covid-19, this patented Helios UV-C Sterilizer Cabinet has found a new and much needed function as a potential method to sterilize re-usable face masks.

Edlund has had customers who are repurposing their KSUV-18 Sterilizer Cabinets with the arrival of the corona virus. The Edlund cabinet uses UV-C light to safely sterilize knives and other kitchen utensils in under 4 minutes with 99% efficacy, which is why many institutional kitchens across the country have the KSUV-18 in their facility. With the coronavirus pandemic continuing, as states across the country open up foodservice businesses, the sterilization power of the Edlund KSUV-18 is being re-purposed to sterilize masks for re-use.* The KSUV-18 has an exclusive non-filtering clear slotted rack that holds knives in place as well as a mirrored interior so that there are no shadows on the surface of any knives in the holding rack within the cabinet. This causes the powerful sanitizing UV-C light to bounce and touch the entire surface area of the knives, ensuring full sterilization of all the items placed on the rack within the cabinet. Many foodservice operations who have the Edlund KSUV-18 are using the sterilization capabilities of the UV-C light in an attempt to sterilize reusable face masks between use.

If your organization is currently using non-disposable masks, you may want to invest in Edlund’s Helios™ UV-C Sterilizer Cabinet. The all stainless steel construction with the UV filtered plexiglass door is highly durable and built to last in a busy industrial or institutional kitchen. The cabinets are keyed, and they have a lockable handle for added security. The Knife/Mask holder can accommodate 12 knives plus one steel or up to 8 masks separated for complete coverage on all surfaces. The KSUV-18 is also very easy to operate with a timer that needs to be set at 15 minutes to ensure masks or utensils are sterilized. These cabinets take up a relatively small footprint at 19”W x 24”H x 6”D and they can plug into a standard 115 volt receptacle.

*Use of the Edlund UV-C Sterilizer Cabinet does come with a disclaimer that while Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation has shown excellent results in tests on other similar viruses, the CDC does not yet have any data regarding UV tests on COVID-19. For this reason, Edlund Company; or Cook’s, cannot guarantee its effect for this purpose. We are, however, hopeful that testing by the CDC will indicate similar success as is seen on other contaminants such as E. coli bacteria.
